Regina Wyatt writes a book about one of the most critical moments in her life. In high school, she entered a specialized scholarship program that was trying to recruit more teachers in Nevada. She was placed in an inclusion classroom that combined special and general education students together. That first day, Regina approached a little boy seated in a corner. The teacher had moved him away from the other students because he had some behavioral issues and would always distract other students. She sat with this child and spoke to him. And for the first time, Regina learned that she had no clue about how to teach students with behavioral and learning problems. She was only 16 years old. Even with the extensive schooling that she was receiving from the scholarship program, Regina did not feel like she had the tools to teach this child. Somehow, the gods of inspiration smiled upon her, and she was hit by the idea of teaching him to play hangman so he could learn to spell words.
Built to Teach-Powerful Lessons for Special Education Teacher
The idea of this is a book to support special education teachers and the students in their classrooms. As a special education teacher, Regina was given many complex textbooks in college, but none of them provided a quick framework for what was needed to know in the profession to get it started.
